Cambodian discoveries
Although my time in Cambodia was shorter than expected, I still have a nice view of this country. I travelled together with Sebastian, a friendly German guy who I met in Myanmar. The temples of Angkor are Cambodia’s main attraction which we visited for three days. I was amazed by the hordes (thousands and thousands) of tourists, mainly Cambodians, Japanese, Koreans and Chinese. This bike-friendly, but exhausting place was still impressive, even after seeing loads of other temples before in Guatemala, Mexico, Japan, Thailand and Myanmar. The beautiful boat trip from Siem Reap to Battambang brought us to the Children of the river (see below).
In Phnom Penh we visited a former school where thousands of Cambodians were imprisoned and tortured during the regime of Khmer Rouge. It always gives you a terrible feeling seeing this sort of places. Many people give comments like how obscure, crazy and incomprehensible it was, but often forgot that nowadays it is still happening in many places of the world and that it is also part of the future. There is a world-wide mission to prevent these kinds of miseries to happen again.
Last Wednesday I returned to Holland. So my trip around the globe was completed in just less than 100 days while having spent 60 hours in airspace. As you can see on this picture, my home town Utrecht is still a beautiful place! If possible I will go in March to South Africa to continue my trip. I will keep you posted as usual!
